Recently, Assemblyman Brian Curran and local elected officials presented certificates to the winners of his seventh annual Flag Day Art and Essay Contest at Greis Park in Lynbrook. More than 100 students from kindergarten through sixth grade participated by writing an essay or drawing a picture about what the American Flag means to them, and local veterans served as the judges for the contest. Each student winner received a certificate of recognition and an American flag. The runners-up received a certificate of recognition.

“I would like to thank all of the students who put their hard work and talent into these wonderful pieces of art and essays, not just our winners and runners-up,” said Curran. “We have a lot of talented students here in our community. It is truly remarkable to see what our flag means to so many young people. Congratulations to our winners, and thank you to our veterans who judged the submissions. It is very important that our young people know and appreciate the history of our great nation and our flag, and I believe this event helps them understand.”

The students recognized are:

  • Ava Sclafani of St. Christopher’s School: third-grade winner
  • Haidyn Goldspiel of William S. Covert School: fifth-grade winner
  • Erin Reeves of William S. Covert School: fifth-grade runner-up
