Legislator Rhoads to Host Free Child Car Seat Safety Inspections

Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads invites all parents, grandparents and caregivers to have their child car seats inspected for proper installation on Thursday, June 7th at Wantagh Park.  Child car seats are required for children under the age of seven.

Chris Mistron, from Nassau County Traffic Safety, will be on hand to inspect child car seats for proper installation and security and will provide free hands-on advice.

 

We must do all we can to protect our children when on the road. The proper installation of a child’s car seat is critical to ensuring safety in a vehicle. Take this opportunity to let a professional make sure your child seat is safely installed in your vehicle.

Major Improvements To Wantagh Park Are Announced

New Athletic Fields, Mini-Golf Course, Fishing and Picnic Pavilions & Dog Run

 

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, County Legislator Steve Rhoads and New York State Senator Michael Venditto today announced that Wantagh Park will undergo major improvements including new athletic fields, a new mini-golf course, picnic pavilions, lighthouse, dog run, fishing pavilion, renovated and expanded administration/marine club, and new restrooms.

 

“My administration is committed to improving the quality of life and recreational opportunities for our residents,” said County Executive Mangano. “Wantagh Park has been an integral part of Nassau County for decades and this historic park is a recreational centerpiece of the South Shore community. These improvements will give the park a complete restoration and I am excited to see residents enjoy the new and improved amenities that Wantagh Park has to offer.”

 

Improvements to Wantagh Park will include:

Four new turf synthetic athletic fields;

  • 10 new picnic pavilions;
  • Renovated and expanded administration building/marine club;
  • Dog run;
  • Fishing pavilion; and
  • Restrooms near the playground area.

 

Recently completed projects include:

  • New 18-hole nautical themed mini-golf course;
  • New lighthouse near the marina.

 

The four new turf synthetic athletic fields were funded through the County’s Capital Plan and $450,000 provided by Senator Michael Venditto.

 

Wantagh Park, located in Southeastern Nassau County at 1 King Road, has been part of the county park system since 1961. Consisting of 111 acres, the park provides a waterfront location and numerous opportunities for recreation, along with seating areas that allow visitors to relax and enjoy the magnificent view. Wantagh Park offers the following activities:

 

 

Athletics/Physical Activities:

  • Five tennis courts and one basketball court; and
  • Athletic fields include three softball fields and one baseball field, two of which are lighted (permits required).

 

Fitness Trail:

  • Two-mile Fitness Trail that provides a jogging or walking trail and 20 attractive and simple fitness stations that incorporate a variety of exercises. These include stretching, pull-ups, sit-ups and balance walking exercises that increase slightly in difficulty as the trail proceeds. The trail begins by the entrance to the park and winds around the park before ending by the marina.

 

Family/Kids:

  • An 18-hole miniature golf course;
  • A playground located at the north end of the park;
  • Reserved picnic areas, which include barbecue equipment and one sheltered area (permit required).

 

Swimming:

  • A swimming complex includes an Olympic-sized main pool, a diving pool, a “kiddie” pool, training pool, an interactive water-play area and two water slides (30 foot). The pool complex includes various conveniences, including lockers, showers, a concession stand, and lounge and deck chairs.

 

Boating & fishing:

  • Launch ramp permits are available seasonally or daily (fee required; permit obtainable at the Park Administration Office).A fishing pier just beyond the marina is open year-round, weather permitting; and
  • Marine boat slips are also available.

 

Dog run:

  • A dog run includes separate areas for big and small dogs. Please note that dogs are not allowed in any County parks or preserves, with the exception of the dog runs.

 

Other:

  • Bocci and horseshoe courts are available, along with a game area for chess and checkers and a senior citizen gazebo.

Mangano Announces 2015 Lottery For Marina Slips At Wantagh Park

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano has announced the 2015 lottery process for marina slips at Wantagh Park has begun. 2015 lottery applications will be accepted until Friday, March 13th at 3:00 p.m. All applications must be submitted in person at the Wantagh Park Administration Building. The lottery drawing will be held on Saturday, March 14th at 10:00 a.m.

 

The following required material is to be submitted with the lottery application:

• Valid Nassau County Leisure Passport

• Valid New York State Driver’s License

• Valid New York State Boat Registration

• Current Residential Tax Or Utility Bill

• $27.00 (Non-Refundable) Application Fee – Cash, Visa, Or MasterCard (No Check)

• NOTE: Only One Application Per Boat Is Permitted

 

Seasonal slip fees are based on the Nassau County Ordinance Fees and are not pro-rated if the slip is awarded later in the season.

 

The 2015 Marina rates will be as follows:

• Electric/Common Water (B, C, D, E, F, AND G DOCKS)

• $80.00 per foot, PLUS $110.00 FOR Electric – Minimum of $1,760.00

• Non Electric/Common Water (A, H, I, AND J DOCKS)

• $65.00 per foot – Minimum of $975.00

Dec 6: ‘Santa In The Park’ At Wantagh Park

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano announced Santa Claus will be visiting Wantagh Park on Saturday, December 6th at 12:00 p.m. at the Wantagh Park Community Clubhouse.

 

Santa will be arriving at the park in a Fire Truck and all children will have the opportunity to meet with Santa and give him their holiday wish list. Toys, candy, cookies, and hot chocolate will be distributed by Santa’s elves.

Mangano: Registration For Nassau County’s Successful Summer Recreation Program Begins February 1st

Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced that registration for Nassau County’s successful Summer Recreation Program for 2014 will begin Saturday, February 1st. The 2014 Summer Recreation Program will run from June 30th – August 7th.

 

Nassau County’s Summer Recreation Program, operates in four County Parks: Cantiague Park in Hicksville; Eisenhower Park in East Meadow; Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach; and Wantagh Park in Wantagh. The program is for children ages 5 to 12, separated in the following categories: early childhood (5-6); juniors (7-8); intermediate (9-10); and seniors (11-12). Parents can choose between two sessions for their children: either 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. or 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

 

Fees for the program range from $700 for one child for the shorter session to $850 for the full-day session, with discounts available for both sessions for additional children from the same family. The registration deadline is June 1, 2014. There is a registration fee of $25 for returning campers (from 2013) who register by March 1, 2014, and a registration fee of $50 for new campers (regardless of registration date) and returning campers who apply after March 1, 2014. Registration fees are not refundable. If all final payments are not received by June 1, 2014, your spot in the program may be lost and the registration fee will not be refunded.

 

In addition to 45 minutes of open swim time at three of the parks, other activities include: arts and crafts, board and recreational games, Quick Start Tennis, 1st Tee Golf, and sports such as baseball, basketball, flag football, golf, Kan Jam, soccer, tennis, volleyball, and wiffle ball.
